No Relocation For Labasa Squatter Settlement

More than 200 squatter houses within Labasa will be regularised and formalised from next year and it is going to cost $740,000.

This plan by the Lands Department was revealed during the Northern Development Plan meeting at the Commissioner Northern’s conference room at Macuata House last Friday.

The department’s divisional manager, Joseva Vuniamatana, said more than 200 squatter houses had been officially recognised and recorded as squatter settlements.

Mr Vuniamatana said the Government had no intentions to relocate these informal settlements because it would be costlier.

Instead the Government will regularise the land lease of all informal settlements in the country.

“It will take a little time to work on these project so all work will begin early next year” he said.

Mr Vuniamatana said the department had also issued licences this year for contractors to work on road projects.

“We expect applications for these licences to increase come next year,” he said.
