Press FC Draws With Host Dowtown FC

Since the championship establishment in 1986 Lautoka clubs have always been a force to reckon with over the years.

Leed FC became the first club from the Sugar city to appear in the first final in 1988 bowing out to FSC (Ba) at home.

Lautoka General became the first club to claim first ever victory in 1983. Since then four other clubs have engraved their names in the NCC trophy with Lautoka General in 1996, Foodtown Warriors (2000), GM United (2005 and 2006).

What happened: Lautoka Champions Press FC came from behind to equalise with Nadroga champion Downtown FC 1-1 during the 2014 Kriz Signs National Club Championship (NCC) western playoff at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka yesterday.

Both side looked impressive with their respective district players in the side with nil- all at the break.

But good strategy prevailed as the host outplayed the Press tough defence which resulted in the 44 yard shot from Tomasi Tuicakau in the 43 rd minute to sail over goalie Viliame Tabucala.

Press FC gathered them together and applied the pressure and paid off when Jone Vono with his speed ran from the half line to score past Alivereti Baleiloa in the 52 minute.

Big plays: striker Tomasi Tuicakau was on song with his thundering shots at goal.

Star turn: defender Epeli Lairoti proved himself despite small in size to keep the defence on par with the attack.

Comments: Press FC coach Lambert Sarju said: “The boys did not fell back despite the first goal and they kept attacking. We are taking each match as the final but Downtown was not an easy team to match but we kept on playing possession football and we got a point from the match.”

Downtown FC coach Mumal Krishan said: “Press FC was a better side but the boys did give a good match scoring first but it we lacked in the fitness level that why we conceded the equaliser. It has been a while we have returned to the NCC since 2010.”
