A family’s dream of seeing their son graduate from university was shattered after a 19-year-old student drowned in Qauia River, Lami, on Saturday.

Grandmother of  Watisoni Vutaga, Mary Sarasau, was trying to coming to terms with the loss of her grandson.

The 62-year-old woman sat crying as she recalled her last moments with Watisoni. He was to sit his Fiji National University final exams today. He was studying at the FNU’s College of Agriculture at Koronivia, Nausori.

“We were all at a funeral at Caubati on Friday where Watisoni stayed up whole night with me to prepare the food and clean the dishes,” Mrs Sarasau said.

“I came home early on Saturday because I was not feeling well followed by Watisoni and his nephew.”

She said the boys came home with lunch packs and after having their share they went to their aunty’s place past the Qauia Bridge.

“The boys cleared some woods and were returning when they saw the bridge flooded with water and people crowded at the bridge,” Mrs Sarasau said.

“His nephew told me that they then decided to go up the river at Lami Heights and swim across.”

She said the nephew told her that he was the first to reach the bank and held on to a tree branch.

The nephew said he looked back and saw Watisoni going under three times before going down for good.

From the time the family received the news; the grandmother had gone to the bridge and called out his name hoping for him to come back to her.

The grandmother described the boy as hardworking, peaceful quiet and good at farming.

Watisoni’s parents, who live in Lautoka, have been informed of the loss.

A Police search team found Watisoni’s body under the Qauia Bridge yesterday afternoon.
