The Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa has set up a massive 10-metre high Christmas tree in the centre of the resort lobby.

Its decoration was made locally by hand.

Guest relations officer Asinate Umu said the resort management had decided to decorate the Christmas tree with locally hand-made products.

“The tree is laced with handmade doves bought from a Rise Beyond the Reef Fiji, a non-governmental organisation,” she said.

Ms Umu said the decision to decorate the tree with hand-made products was to celebrate the spirit of Christmas in a traditional Fijian style and help give back to the community.

“The NGO mostly helps rural communities which has a lot of talents but fail to earn a living from their artistic skills,” she said.

“Hand-made doves have been attached to the tree which is 10 metres high in the middle of the lobby.”

At night the tree is a hotspot for photo sessions for guests.

“The resort staff this year donated gifts to the underprivileged children at Loloma Homes in Sabeto and at the Children’s Ward at the Lautoka Hospital last week,” she said.

Meanwhile, the spirit of Fijians celebrating the festive season has won praises from a New Zealand couple.

“I generally visit Fiji during August or September when it is colder in New Zealand but the festivity spirit is amazing,” said Ian Smith.

Although Mr Smith will not spend Christmas in Fiji he is looking forward to experience the spirit of this festive season during his stay.
