A family of Lodoni in Tailevu North watched helplessly as floodwaters rushed through their home on Saturday night.

Marica Naitaka and her family were asleep when they felt floodwaters soak through their beddings in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Fiji Sun news team caught up with them while they were cleaning up their home yesterday.

Mrs Naitaka said they had been living at the village for seven years and this flood had caused a lot of damages to their home.

“On Saturday morning I was sleeping when I felt the water beside my mattress and when I stood up from where I was lying down I could feel I was standing on cold water,” Mrs Naitaka said.

“Now we are just cleaning up. The flood had destroyed all our beddings, wardrobes, couch and all our timber cases.

“This is our first major flood; it was scary because before the floodwaters never used to be halfway into our sitting room but this time it was destructive.”

Since there was no water, she said the family had pumped water from the river to clean their beddings and clothes.

“We are using water from the river because there’s no water and there are a lot of things that we need to wash and clean up in order for us to get back to normal.”

Mrs Naitaka said the damage to their home was estimated to  cost $2000.
