No child should be subjected to any form of child labour says the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar.

She made these comments after concerns were raised on the increasing number of children seen begging in streets of Suva.

“We will not condone any form of child labour and child abuse or neglect for that matter,” Ms Akbar said.

She said in August the ministry had carried out a profiling exercise which showed that there were 23 street beggars in Suva.

“We are also carrying out similar profiling exercise in the other city and towns.”

“We are ensuring that children are not subjected to child labour and we will see to it that no child is forced to earn a living for his or her family,” she said.

She said they were urging families to abide by the Government’s education policies to ensure that children were in school and not subjected to child labour.

Ms Akbar said the Government had put in place legislations like the Child Welfare Decree to ensure mandatory reporting of cases by child care professionals like medical officers, Police officers, social welfare officers and lawyers.
