There was commotion on the road close to Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori, yesterday as people tried to identify an accident driver.

The driver was driving a van which was involved in a crash with another car.

Traffic was diverted because of downed telephone and power lines. People living nearby and pedestrians joined in the melee which blocked part of the road.

There was a lot of shouting, jostling and fingerpointing before Police arrived and took control.

A woman passenger in the car reportedly sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. The car also went out of control and landed in a ditch.

Three men in the van suffered minor bruises. Police interviewed them on the scene. The van veered off the road, uprooted a telephone pole, and crashed between two residential properties. Fortunately, no one else was injured, apart from those in the accident vehicles.

Nausori Fire Station officer Kaliova Turaga said they were at the station when they heard a loud noise. The station is close to the accident scene. Mr Turaga said it happened so quickly that it took everyone by surprise.

Telephone and power lines hung dangerously across the road. Police had to disperse the crowd that had gathered because of the risks. Police have not released details.
