Sigatoka To Host Street Party

Plans are in the pipeline for the rugby crazy town of Sigatoka to welcome 2015 in a grand style with a New Year’s Eve street party.
This was confirmed by Sigatoka Town Council special administrator Jay Whyte.

“We are trying to organise a New Year’s Eve street party and trying to get approval from Fiji Roads Authority,” Mr Whyte said.
The approval will see the closure of the main street in Sigatoka running adjacent to the Sigatoka River to host the street party.

While some towns and cities have faced objections towards their street parties, Mr Whyte confirmed that so far there had been no objection from the businesshouses.

Unfortunately in 2014, the street party in Sigatoka had to be cancelled to mourn the death of two chiefs.

Mr Whyte said the decision to cancel the street party was to respect the Fijian protocol because it was the time for mourning in the two respective villages.

The two late chiefs were, Turaga Na Kalevu Ratu Sakiusa Makutu and Ratu Isikeli Tasere, the Tui Madudu.

Tui Madudu died on Boxing Day last year after a long illness at his Nepani resdeince in Nasinu.

The late Ratu Sakiusa was the eighth Na Ka Levu. He died on November 24, 2014 at his chiefly residence in Cuvu Village after a short illness.

Both the late chiefs were former mayors of Sigatoka and had contributed immensely towards the development of the town. Meanwhile, Rakiraki Town is also preparing to host their second New Year’s Eve street party.
