About 40 community representatives and Fiji Locally Marine Managed Area (FLMMA) network partners have been meeting at Navuniivi Village in Rakiraki, Ra, since Wednesday to share lessons learned from managing their marine managed areas.

The FLMMA network’s annual lesson learning meeting which is a three -day event will see various stakeholders including the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Fisheries Department, tourism, University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University, non-governmental organisations, private sector and members of the community.

SeaWeb Asia Pacific (Fiji) programme associate Alumeci Nakeke said the objective of the meetings was for the parties to share knowledge on various issues.

“What they face and try to find solutions or learn from each other as they will be sharing stories on the successes and challenges of managing their natural resources,” Ms Nakeke said.

“These include the challenges of poaching, burning of land, beche-de-mer issues, mining and other issues,”

Ms Nakeke said FLMMA works in the inshore and coastal areas of Fiji including iqoliqoli areas comprising some 410 areas under community jurisdiction throughout the country.

“FLMMA sites use a management approach termed community-based adaptive management (CBAM) where local stakeholders develop a natural resource management plan and implement it, monitor, analyse and communicate the results and then revise the management plan as needed and continue,” she said.

The meeting ends today.
