Nasau Graduates Build A Legacy

The 2014 graduates of the Nasau Youth Training Centre outside Sigatoka left their mark by building a new carpentry building for the centre.

The building was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports, Josefa Sania, yesterday.

The centre’s carpentry lecturer, Apenai Vatucicila, said: “We’ve built houses before but never a double storey building. This is the first time we have done this and it is very successful.

“I’m very proud of what our students have achieved. We’ve had some difficult times but we managed to pull through,” he said.

The $65,000 building, funded by the Government, was built by the carpentry students of the centre.

“For most of our practical work we would usually send our students for attachments but for the last two years we’ve managed to work on our capital projects with the assistance of Ministry of Finance, where we build houses.

“The project started off on February 20 this year. We’d gone through all the proper procedures working with the Ministry of Health making sure that we follow the right protocols,” Mr Vatucicila said.

He said the practical work would help the students as they embark on their journey to major workplaces.

“I made sure that both theory and practical work was taken very seriously to meet what they will face out in the industry field.

“This will enable the students to handle whatever pressure thrown at them when they join major industries,” the proud lecturer said.

There are future projects in place for 2015 where students will build a two- bedroom house and the renovation of the centre’s dining hall.
