Fiji Electricity Authority has embarked on building a new substation that will reinforce its electricity grid for the ever growing demand in Suva City.

The 33 kv/11kv Zone Substation project which was won by local infrastructure development company, Engineer Procure Construct (Fiji) Limited, is worth $10 million.

A groundbreaking ceremony with a traditional pooja proceeding was made at the project site where earth works have begun on the project located off Knollys Street, Suva

FEA chief executive Hasmukh Patel said: “We knew that there were lots of projects on the drawing board. And they were about to start any time in the near future.

“We looked at a number of sites but as they say you finally end up where God has planned you to be. And I think Knolly Street was the one. “

He thanked the Bainimarama Government for allocating the land in order to fulfill its foresight of catering for the capital’s infrastructure and population.

Engineer Procure Construct managing director Vijay Zutshi said the company had been in partnership with FEA for about 10 years.

“The area will consist of a large control building about 25 metres long and 15 metres wide and two large transformers of about 15mba will be placed on the site here,” Mr Zutshi said.

A maximum of up to 150 people will be working on the year-long project.

For FEA, Mr Patel said the project was only part of FEA’s many interlinked projects in the pipeline and those that had already been done.

“This Knolly Street Zone Sub Station is part of a bigger project. And the bigger project is basically is that FEA is in the process of replacing some 33 year-old 33,000 vault underground cables which forms the 33kv ring circuit in Suva.

“So basically the cables run all the way from Cunningham Road to Kinoya to Vatuwaqa to Suva and Suva to Hibiscus Park.

“These have been underground for 35 years and we believe they have come to the end of their lives.”

Hence they need to be replaced to improve the reliability and security of the power supply to Suva City and the suburbs, he added.

Tritech Consulting Engineers based in Nausori are the consultants for the project.
