Twenty-two-year old Ruth Pickering has never imagined graduating in a male dominated field.

Her mother wished her to be a nurse, but Ms Pickering said building had been something she wanted to do.

Yesterday she graduated with a certificate in carpentry from Nasau Youth Training Centre, Sigatoka.

She said: “I have always been fascinated with building things that people even you will admire and it will be there for more than 10 years.

“This has always been something that I wanted to do and I am so happy that I have managed to pull through,” she said.

Being the only female in the class Ms Pickering admits that she faced some problems in that.

“In this institution we are being brought up from different families, different religions and we come to meet putting that aside and sometimes when I need to open up to a sister I am not able to.

“I have to admit it has been quite hard but with God by my side I have managed to overcome these problems through his love and guidance,” she said.

The former Nabua Secondary School student did not let her exam results pull her down.

“I did not pass my Form Six exams last year but I did not see it as a failure instead it made me eager to find other alternatives because I knew that it was not the end for me.

“I came to Nasau Youth Training Centre to begin my studies and the experience has been very memorable especially how everyone is treated equally no matter the gender,” she proudly said.

Ms Pickering is looking at furthering her studies and pursuing her dreams of becoming a carpenter.
