Three-car Smash-Up

Peni Namalumu, 26, was in a state of shock after witnessing a road accident at Martintar in Nadi yesterday.

Mr Namalumu was selling green coconuts on the roadside when the accident involving three vehicles happened at around 3pm.

It is alleged the driver of a Hyundai Santé Fe vehicle, was under the influence of alcohol when he first hit a taxi then had a head-on collision with a Holden Commodore.

“The vehicle was overspeeding when it hit the taxi and overtook another vehicle. It was too fast and there was a big bang; the tyre blew up,” Mr Namalumu said.

“It was just something out of the movie; then the crash. Lucky no one died,” he said.

It is also alleged that the group in this vehicle had all been drinking.

“The driver came out and the group scattered in the bushes while the driver was assaulted by the taxi driver,” Mr Namalumu said. The driver of the Holden Commodore, a woman, was treated at a private clinic and allowed to go home along with a 22-week pregnant lady while a young boy escaped injury.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident, but said details were sketchy and investigation was going on when this edition went to press last night.

“Three vehicles were involved, but there were no serious injuries. Police are  trying to get more information on what  happened,” Ms Naisoro said.
