Circumstances into the death of a baby during childbirth at Lautoka Hospital will be investigated thoroughly. Minister for Health  and Medical Services Jone Usamate promised this after the matter was highlighted by National Federation Party parliamentarian Prem Singh in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Usamate shared his sadness at the passing away of the baby, after complications arose during delivery at the Lautoka Hospital on November 31 this year.

The parents of the baby, had alleged medical negligence after their baby’s shoulder was allegedly broken during the birthing process.

According to Mr Singh, the mother of the baby had to be transferred from the Ba Hospital.

In the process of delivering the child, it has been alleged that the baby ‘s

shoulder was broken.

“There has been an exhange of emails between me and the baby’s parents, “ said Mr Usamate.

“I have instructed for an initial investigation and we have also decreed that third party investigations be carried out as well.

“We have also taken proactive measures to ensure the health of expectant mothers at hospitals.”

Mr Usamate did not specify when the results of the investigation would be made public. He has been overseeing a major overhaul of health service delivery.
