Bronze Finish For Fiji women

Fiji finished third in the women’s division at the 2014 Oceania Pacific Cup after beating Papua New Guinea 8-0 during the bronze medal final yesterday.

Head coach Alison Southey was pleased with her girls for improving from their Wold Hockey League final on Thursday.

“The score line is better than Thursday in the gold medal play-offs. We had 3-1 in that game and 8-0 today (yesterday), so I’m really happy with the girls’ performance,” she said.

Looking toward Round Two of the World Hockey League in India next year, Southey anticipated a busy training schedule.

“We start training again next January and with that level of hockey we can’t really take too much time off.”

Tiara Dutta started the scoring with the opening goal followed by skipper Catherine Fabiano, two from Lora Bukalidi and one from Raijieli Naisua to lead 5-0 at halftime. Dutta, Lala Ravatu and Bukalidi each added a goal to put the score line at 8-0.

In the men’s division Australia Country defeated Papua New Guinea 6-1 to win the bronze medal.
