Work Starts On Defence White Paper

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) says work has started on preparing a Defence White Paper.

RFMF Commander Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga said a committee had been appointed and its terms of reference had been approved by the Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva.

The paper will contain policies now how to strengthen defence capability of the RFMF.

He said the committee needed to work on this project quickly so that Mr Natuva could look at it before it went to Cabinet for approval.

In his maiden in speech in Parliament, Mr Natuva said he had aready put into motion the formulation of:

– A National Security Policy;

– A Defence White Paper; and

– A Police White Paper.

“These strategic policies will basically outline the strategic objectives and requirements in terms of capability and capacity development and financing for the National Security Sector for the next four years,” Mr Natuva said.

In an earlier interview, Mr Natuva said that in terms of equiping the RFMF, necessary capabilities and support to continue to maintain and build its peacekeeping footprint across the globe would be maintained.

Brigadier-General Tikoitoga said all these would be included in the Defence White Paper and those involved in its preparation were familiar with what the institution woud need in the next four years.

Meanwhile, he has also confirmed there would be no new recruitment for the RFMF next year.
