Civic Wins Club Title

Professional Security Civic soccer team won the 2014 Kriz Signs National Club Championship yesterday at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori after beating Namaka Football Club 3-2 in the final.

What happened:

Namaka started out on a good note applying pressure on Civic’s defenders as Samuela Drudru for Namaka had three unsuccessful attempts at goal.

Beniamino Mateinaqara for Namaka the first goal after beating Civic goalkeeper Ulaiasi Tamanisau. Namaka 1 – 0 Civic.

Civic equalised for 1-all three minutes later from a penalty kick to Drudru. Namaka took the lead again a minute later with a cross from Drudru to Mateinaqara who scored a brilliant goal, 2-1.

Civic came back strongly in the second-half after a cross from Napolioni Qasevakatini to Emori Ragata who headed in the equaliser for 2-all.

The goal boosted the Suva-based club as they began dominating the first three minutes of second-half keeping Namaka at bay. Waisake Tabucavu had the chance to put Namaka in the lead with his shot from the edge of the penalty box missing the goalmouth by an inch.

But Civic’s Nickel Chand was the hero for the Suva club when he shot in the winner past Namaka goalkeeper Vereti Dickson for their 3-2 win and $3000 cash.

Star Turn: Goalkeepers for both teams Ulaiasi Tamanisau and Vereti Dickson were outstanding making spectacular saves.

Big Play

Namaka put on a class performance giving the Civic side filled with Suva reps a run for their money.

Namaka Football Club coach Pranesh Amarsee, “In the 58 years since Namaka first came about, we won the local league for the first time, made it past the NCC play-offs and went into the finals. Regardless of our loss today (yesterday) to Civic, we achieved a lot and I am proud of the boys.”

Professional Security Civic president Ritesh Pratap, “Last year when we lost in the semi-finals, we decided that we would come back harder and stronger this year and try to win the tournament and we did it.

“For the first time Civic has won the NCC and I could not be happier with the boys because all their hard work has paid off.”
