Vodafone Fiji 7s player Semi Kunatani will be out for a couple of weeks following a concussion he suffered during Fiji’s game against Canada in the 2014 Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay 7s in South Africa yesterday.

Kunatani took the ball from Apisai Domolailai and went on to beat Canadian defenders until he was brought down by Justin Douglas two metres in front of the tryline – thus the concussion.

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan said Kunatani was recovering well yesterday but would be out for a couple of weeks.

“Semi (Kunatani) got knocked out for like a minute, but he is OK now. The doctors have checked him and he will be out for a couple of weeks,” Ryan said.

“In rugby they take concussions seriously, so he will not playing for a while.”

When Kunatani suffered the concussion, Canada’s Ciaran Hearn quickly aided Kunatani turning him onto his side into a recovery position.

Upon watching the incident again, Ryan said Hearn’s showed great sportsmanship out on the field.

“Ciaran (Hearn) is a top man and it shows what great sport rugby is and it is lovely to see that he did that for Semi (Kunatani),” Ryan said.

“Regardless of the competition it shows that everyone is still caring out on the field and it was wonderful to see that kind of him (Ciaran Hearn) do that.”

Despite the injury suffered by Kunatani, Fiji went on to beat Canada 26-7 with tries from Jerry Tuwai, Isake Katonibau and Apisai Domolailai.
