Blighwater Unveils North Projects

Blighwater Shipping Company Limited is working on expanding its business next year. The company confirmed that its focus will not only be in shipping but in alignment with small medium enterprise (SME) projects.

Blighwater Shipping Company Limited chief executive, Captain William Vulivuli told the Fiji Sun that these projects are lined-up for Vanua Levu.

He said these projects are done to stimulate economic growth in the North, in line with Government’s Look North Policy plan. He said they would blend well with the infrastructure development currently taking place in the division.

Two areas the company is looking at are tourism and agriculture.

“There is a lot of development going on in the northern division but the income is stagnant. We want to stimulate growth, allow people to have money with the resources they have and in this case, we are giving them a disposable income.”

Tourism

As for tourism, Mr Vulivuli said, they would work closely with property owners on this project.

“We are going to play a similar role to that South Sea Cruises Limited is playing in the Yasawa Group of Islands roping in tourists for backpackers which are 100 per cent locally owned,” he said.

“It doesn’t have to be fancy. All we are going to do is to do the marketing for them. We will bring in the tourists they deserve.”

Agriculture

The company is going to work closely with farmers in the North. These farmers, Mr Vulivuli says, are being taken advantage of by the middle men who always control the price of their produce.

“If there is a huge demand, middlemen still put the price down because there is already plenty of supply available. The company has its own storeroom and we will buy directly from the farmers at the same price. “We are going to act like the engine room for both these projects.
