Patterson Unveils New Ship

Shipping pioneer, Patterson Brothers Shipping Company Limited, unveiled their new vessel in their hometown Levuka yesterday.

The MV Spirit of Altruism, a passenger and Ro-Ro (roll on roll off) cargo ship arrived into the country last week.

A company official yesterday confirmed that the vessel was from Italy. The same company official also confirmed that four new buses to be used with the new vessel have also arrived. Fiji Sun was able to capture pictures of these buses being off loaded from the Kings Wharf on Monday.

While no formal announcement have been made, it is understood that the vessel will be servicing the Savusavu/Natovi route, earlier established by Blighwater Shipping Limited’s MV Westerland.

The arrival of the MV Spirit of Altruism is expected to provide a tougher competition to other shipping companies servicing the northern division. It will also be an opportunity for them to win back their share in the market.

It is the only company servicing the Suva/Natovi/Levuka route and also introduced the Suva to Nabouwalu and Labasa route which were not previously catered for in 1977, a route they still reliably service today.

According to vessel finder, the MV Spirit of Altruism was built in 1972 and has a running speed of 12.9 knot per hour.

She departed for Levuka from the Stanley Brown Naval Base in Suva and arrived into the Old Capital of Fiji at 5pm whereby a traditional welcoming ceremony (cerevi) for her was held.
