Vodafone Flying Fijians head coach, John McKee, strongly believes much work needs to be done ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, McKee was generally pleased with the performance of the Vodafone Flying Fijians this year.

“For me we’ve done a lot of good work this year, especially from the June to November period in terms of play, learning and improving the game process and overall progressing of the team. This is very important knowing that it’s very competitive playing Tier One nations.

“A lot of improvement has taken place over this past year but there is still a lot of work to do especially with the World Cup next year,” McKee said.

McKee said even though their preparation was on track they would need to put in extra effort.

“Of course our preparations and progress have been headed in the right direction but there’s still work to do.

“I will say that they have improved a lot in the area of set plays, which is essential to keeping the game and winning,” he said.

McKee highlighted two key areas the national side would be focusing on moving toward the Rugby World Cup 2015.

“We need to work on rucks in order to win quick balls and this is one area that the opposition has often been successful in slowing us down which I saw when we played Wales. If we can master this we can definitely gain ground on the opposition.

“Also we need to work on the maul defence. Northern Hemisphere countries are really strong in this and use it a lot to slow the ball and get penalties and we’ll need to strengthen this area if we want to be able to counter them in competition.”

Fiji currently is ranked number 12 in World Rugby rankings. Fiji is grouped in Pool A at the 2015 England Rugby World cup alongside Australia, England, Wales and Uruguay.
