Inspiring Stories Of Success

F

or four years, Viliame Kanawale was pushing wheelbarrow in the Suva Market. Six months ago Mr Kanawale ditched the wheelbarrow and joined the Police Training School in Nasova, Suva. On Friday he graduated with 153 other recruits.

Now he has a career he can be proud of. He looks back with a sense of satisfaction. He had tough beginning in life. After completing Form Seven in Suva Grammar School, he had to look for work to provide for his pregnant partner.

He wandered into the streets and ended at the Suva Market where he became a wheelbarrow boy. Life was hard. The meager earnings were inadequate to sustain a family. He decided to look for other opportunities. When the opening came for a place at the Police Academy, he grabbed it with both hands. His achievement has lifted his self-esteem.

He said: “I feel excited to start a new lease of life a new career rather than going back to the streets. I feel like an important person now because when being a wheelbarrow boy people usually look down on you.”

His wheelbarrow boy ID which he keeps reminds him of his humble beginnings.

In Australia, blind Fijian student Sovaia Sisi Coalala, supported by a partially blind husband, has graduated with double masters. She has become an inspiration to students and the teaching faculty at the University of Wollongong.

There is a common thread that runs through the two achievements.

Ms Coalala overcame her physical challenge to achieve her goal.

Mr Kanawale took advantage of the opportunity he came across to become a policeman.

These are stories of success that we celebrate. No doubt there are many more out there. Their inspiring accounts show that where there is determination, commitment and sacrifice, goals can be achieved.
