Wardens Gold Win

Wardens Gold won the 2014 Fiji Bitter Mokani 7s champions after defeating Red Rock One 33-28 during the final at Ratu Ravuama Vunivalu Memorial School grounds yesterday.

Wardens head coach Lemeki Koroi acknowledged all the support he had received from the Fiji Corrections Service and the team for their commitment.

“We’d like to thank God for his blessing and giving us this win. Thank you to the Fiji Corrections Service for their support in allowing the boys to take time off for preparations and training and a special thank you to the inmates for their invaluable support.

“Much thanks to the boys for their commitment and achieving this win and thanks so much to all our supporters for their prayers and assistance.”

Koroi made a plea for the Fiji Rugby Union and the Vodafone Fiji 7s selectors to be clearer about their selection criteria.

“Often we have approached them to ask them to be clearer about the selection for the national 7s side because I want to know why Niko (Verekauta) has missed selection so that I can work with him on those areas so that he can improve.

“The fact is Fiji currently has no speedster and he can fill that slot and I don’t know why he was dropped but I just want to kindly ask Ben Ryan and the other selectors to communicate to me what Niko is lacking so I can work on it with him.

“The team’s current wings are all built and conditioned for 15s rugby and this is a space I know he can fill. He’s the best candidate currently available to them and if they can help me improve him, he can be ready for the next legs.”

Along with the cup, they received $3000 prizemoney. Tauranga (Ovalau) beat Matainiyavu Youth 10-5 to be crowned Shield winner. Lomaiviti Barbarians defeated Nawairuku 33-14 to win the Bowl.

Uluinakau Two beat Army Green 28-19 to win the Plate.

Semifinal results:

Shield semifinals: Tauranga (Ovalau) 21-7 Nausori, Yako 5-29 Matainiyavu Youth;

Bowl semifinals: Nasolo YB 17-19 Nawairuku, Tacirua Eagles Cane 7-19 Lomaiviti Barbarians; Plate semifinals: Army Green 26-21 Waimanu Gold, Uluinakau Two 17-15 Red Rock Two;
