Alliance Promotes Veggie Farming

Lovu residents in Lautoka have been encouraged to make use of their land and resources for income-generation and healthy living.

This follows a donation of vegetable seeds by Vodafone’s ATH Foundation and Western Charity Alliance to assist members of the settlement in commercial farming.

Alliance executive director Jitendra Naidu said the aim was to encourage youths to engage in income-generation, employment, better farming methods and healthy living.

“There is a need for people to be more involved in agriculture so that land are utilised by the people where they can also benefit from,” Mr Naidu said.

“We have donated some seeds to members of Lovu Sangam Settlement to help them start their commercial farming.

“What we are trying to do is promote agriculture,” he said.

Vodafone ATH Foundation and the Alliance have provided assistance to 10 farmers.

“We have provided them with seeds and nurseries and next year we will be teaming up with the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Youth and sports to create more awareness and encourage people to plant and eat more organic food,” Mr Naidu said.

Meanwhile, Lovu Sangam settlement president Ajay Kumar was thankful to stakeholders for their donations.

“We are very grateful to Vodafone ATH Foundation and Western Charity Alliance for their kind donation and support in promoting agriculture.

“We have five acres of land that we are hoping to cultivate.

“And we are looking at employing more farmers from around the area,” Mr Kumar said.

He said people from around the area would benefit because of the sale of fresh and affordable vegetables from the farm.
