Police: Marijuana On The Rise

The Fiji Police Force is warning members of the public, especially young people to avoid smoking marijuana.

This follows an increase in reported cases of people cultivating and peddling the illegal drugs especially in the festive season.

“This is a period where there is an increase in reports as some try to earn a quick buck from this illegal act,” Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said.

“Our officers and K9 capabilities will be conducting random checks in towns, the two cities and areas known to be involved in this trade.”

Yesterday Police uprooted 68 plants alleged to be marijuana from Valili Street in Nakasi, Nasinu.

No one has been arrested yet, but the land where the plants were uprooted from was recently bought by someone living in Samabula.

Meanwhile, a 23-year -old farmer of Nadi is in police custody for allegedly cultivating plants believed to be marijuana

Ms Naisoro said the report was received last Friday afternoon whereby a team arrested the suspect and confiscated 18 plants and seedlings believed to be marijuana.

“He was questioned and released awaiting analysis from tests to be conducted at the Police Laboratory in Nasova,” Ms Naisoro said.

The Fiji Police Force seek assistance and information from the general public which could lead to arrests and confiscation of drugs, Ms Naisoro said.
