A family of Sasawira Squatter Settlement in Davuilevu is now homeless after their three-bedroom home was destroyed by a landslide around 11am yesterday.

The incident happened because of heavy rain yesterday in the area.

Home owner, Baram Sen, his wife Ashika Nair and their four children Meenal, Komal, Ryan and Tanisha, were inside their home when the incident happened.

Mr Sen said he was having a shower.

“I was in the bathroom when I heard a loud noise against the walls of our house.
“My wife and one of my daughters were in the kitchen and my other children were in the bedroom,” Mr Sen said.

“I thought a car had veered off the road and hit the side of our house, but to my surprise I heard my wife and children shouting.

“My wife must have fallen down because she was was unconscious while one of my daughters, Komal, sustained bruises to her arm and forehead.

“The neighbours then came and helped me get my wife and children out of the house. It was fortunate and we are very lucky that none of us died in the incident.”

The family lost most of the belongings .

“I’ve lived here for the past eight years and this is the first time it has happened to our family.

“I just don’t know how to start my family’s life again because I earn only $150 a week and I have to buy my children’s school stuff,” he said.
