Fiji is again the centre of a major drug investigation.

This follows the confiscation of 30 kilograms of heroin worth AU$30 million (FJ$48m) at the Lautoka Port last Sunday.

The haul was found in a joint operation by the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA).

A suspect is now in Police custody in relation to the discovery of the consignment which the Police and FRCA said had been shipped from Thailand. The find was confirmed by Acting Commissioner of Police Isikeli Vuniwaqa yesterday.

“At this point, we cannot divulge further details because of the nature of investigations,” ACP Vuniwaqa said.

“The success of the operation was because of the tireless work put in by officers of the Fiji Police.”

ACP Vuniwaqa said this should be a warning to those thinking that Fiji was a country that they could use to trade or to transship drugs.

“They should think again because we are closely monitoring our borders.”

FRCA chief executive officer Jitoko Tikolevu said the illicit drugs were found in the tyres of a quad bike.

“The drugs were tightly packed in about 80 packets and the preliminary tests revealed the content to be heroin,” Mr Tikolevu said.

He said the seizure of heroin was rare and it attracted a higher price than cocaine on the streets.

“The container is addressed to a local resident and the case has been handed over to Police for further investigations and prosecution.”

Mr Tikolevu said this was part of their snap operations.

“I commend our officers for carrying out their duties diligently in ensuring our borders are protected from the infiltration of illicit drugs.”

Meanwhile, in 2004, a joint operation by Police and FRCA resulted in the discovery of $1billion worth of crystal methamphetamine also known as ice in Suva.
