Vodafone Flying Fijians halfback Nikola Matawalu has signed up with his new club Bath for the next season.

The West Country side announced its new recruit, who will arrive after next year’s World Cup for the 2015/16 season.

The Dama native from Ra looked forward to his new move.

“I’m really happy to be joining Bath next season,” he said.

“They are a very ambitious club with a very talented squad and coaching team.

“I’m looking forward to settling in and testing myself in the Aviva Premiership, but for the remainder of the season my focus will be with Glasgow.”

Bath club head coach Mike Ford rated Matawalu as a skillful player who had a lot to contribute to the club.

“Niko is an incredibly talented and exciting young player, and we’re eager to see his skill-set worked into our attacking style of play.

“He’s a great character, and we know he’ll fit in really well at the club,” Ford said.

Matawalu, 25 has been a revelation since arriving in Glasgow in 2012, and was voted the club’s player of the season in his first campaign.

However, he will join Bath, who has less depth at halfback than in most positions, with Chris Cook and veteran Peter Stringer currently battling it out for a starting role.

Bath had been heavily linked with a move for Will Genia, but recent reports suggest they face strong competition from clubs in the French Top 14 competition.
