Xmas Cheer From India

Fijian students studying at the Acharya Institute of Graduate Studies (AIGS) in Bangalore, India, were delighted to be part of the Christmas celebration held at the university yesterday.

The five students studying under the Indian Government scholarship applauded the University for the recognizing the event.

First year journalism student, Sheldon Chanel said celebrating Christmas away from home was challenging.

“Christmas back home is celebrated by everyone despite their religion, race and culture and I am glad that we are also able to celebrate it here in India,” he said.

“It is an honour to be the Santa Claus as I am representing my fellow countrymen and my country.”

Mereoni Ravaga, 19, was thankful that the university considered every religion important.

“Despite the fact that Fiji is miles away, I am thankful that the university makes us feel that we are at home,” Miss Ravaga said.

“But most importantly getting to know what Christmas means to each of us.”

Lecturer in charge Allen Hillary said he wanted the students to learn the importance of Christmas.

“There are a lot of international students here and this is one way to make them feel at home and I hope that they have learned the importance of Christmas,” Mr Hillary said.

“Christmas is not only about celebration but is about forgiveness and how Jesus is born within us.”

The students are looking forward to Christmas next year.
