Digicel Business has launched a product here that may ease spending on phone service using a cloud-based telephony service.
Digicel’s introduction of Cloud Telephony comes as it diversifies from its original mobile base, where Vodafone and Inkk dominate the market.

Cloud Telephony allows businesses to no longer have to house a “Private Branch Exchange” or PBX or telephone system within their premises and take on the capital expense.

PBX is a system which through a switchboard allows a business to share a certin number of telephone lines.

This is a subscription-based technology that is hosted remotely from a central shared system and accessed over a private network.

This system often requires an investment in equipment and regular maintenance as the entire telephone system is housed within the premise of a business.

Digicel ICT sales manager, Ravisa Daunivaka said: “Businesses of any size can avail of this cost-effective service on a pay-as-you-go model.

“In effect it allows small and medium size organizations to affordably gain access to advanced features that have traditionally been the domain of large corporate enterprises”.

The service uses Voice-over IP (VoIP) technology to deliver voice and unified communications services to users.

This is packaged with a host of advanced collaboration tools (video and data) which will drive competitive advantage and improve operational efficiency.

“Cloud telephony is essentially a hosted-PBX service which allows Fijian businesses and public sector organisations to refresh their communications infrastructure without having to spend money up front.

“This mean that Fijian businesses don’t have to go out and spend money to buy the capital infrastructure necessary to start, expand, or upgrade IT systems required to operate.

“Digicel allows them to effectively rent the technology features and pay on a limited basis for it every month, thereby allowing business cash reserves to be focused on other strategic initiatives.”

Cloud Telephony is claimed to be Fiji’s first hosted PBX system, an innovation that is part of Digicel’s Investments to grow in the Fijian Telecommunicaion market.
