Habitat for Humanity Fiji (HFHF), through their WASH (Water And Sanitation Hygiene) programme, donated water tanks and helped improve water supply to Najia and Yakani villages in the Yasawa Group.

The villages are located on Viwa Island – to the west of the main Yasawa chain of islands.

The islands always face water problems and villages rely mostly on rainwater.

HFHF helped the villages two days before Christmas – a timely help for the 25 families in Najia and to the four families in Yakani.

HFHF secured funding from both the New Zealand Aid Programme and Australian Aid’s Communities First project to address the insufficient and deteriorating water collection facilities at the villages.

The installation of new and replacement of poor quality guttering, roofing and downpipes and the provision of additional rainwater tanks for storage was undertaken to improve the village’s water collection capacity twofold.

Drought conditions during the year saw the villages shipping in expensive water supplies to survive. Rations were down to a three gallon container per family every two days. With inadequate water supply the risks of infection are increased significantly.

Community engagement in the construction and installation phases provided knowledge for future repairs and maintenance of the new infrastructure. This was complemented by health and hygiene training.

The hand-over ceremony was attended by the villages’ headmen, Joseva Lovolovo, the Najia Village chief and the church pastor Disele Matavesi.

Hamidan Bibi represented HFHF and the donor agencies of the New Zealand (NZ) and Australian governments.
