Judo will not be part of Team Fiji at the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea because of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Fiji Judo Association president Nacanieli Takayawa revealed this yesterday. He said Rio 2016 was the main objective.

“Fiji will not compete in judo at the Pacific Games in PNG next year because our main focus is on Rio 2016. We’ve got the elite squad in full preparation mode now and we’re focusing on Josateki Naulu for Rio. He’s on scholarship and in full training in Japan with Nemani Takayawa. The focus for Fiji for 2015 will be on the Oceania Judo Union Championships will be held in the April in Noumea, New Caledonia and the World Judo Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.

“That’s the game plan for us and we’ll be focusing all our resources on competing in those two events in the build up to the Olympics.”

Josateki Naulu was Fiji’s lone competitor at the 2012 London Olympics and bowed out in the second round of the 81kg men’s event.
