Uluinakau 7s Look For Major Sponsor

Organisers of the 2015 Uluinakau 7s are still holding out for a major sponsor to come on board and support the annual event.

Games general secretary Eliki Kaisuva confirmed this with two weeks to go to the tournament.

“We are still hoping that a major sponsor will share our vision and come on board to assist us financially with our running costs,” he said.

“But over the past years we have been consistent and we are grateful for the companies that have supported us since the inaugural tournament in 2006 back in the village.”

Kaisuva explained the reasons behind some changes being made to next year’s format and the significance of the tournament on the 7s calendar.

“We will use only the main ground at Ratu Cakobau Park this year, as the council has indicated that Ground Two will undergo maintenance, thus we have reduced teams from the normal 40 or 32 to 24 teams only for January 2015.

“Fifteen out of the 24 invited teams have registered and out of the eight Indo-Fijian teams invited, six have shown interest. We have decided to scrap the women’s competition because of low interest from our women’s clubs.

“Ours is the first local 7s event every year, and it will be a build-up for teams competing in the 2015 Uprising 7s.” Kaisuva confirmed the top clubs expected at the tournament and some of the new teams that would be joining.

“The Uluinakau 7s, in its third year at Nausori, has always been an attractive event because of its attractive prizemoney and well-organised format. Two-time champions Redrock, Wardens, Yamacia, Army Tabadamu and Nabua are some of the big names that have confirmed.

“Our vision and mission remains in providing career opportunities in the sporting arena for our youths. Revenue from our gate takings have assisted in village and school projects.”

The Uluinakau 7s will be held on January 9-10 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
