Women Should Also Make Decisions

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, says there is an important need to increase women representation in decision making at every level.

“The 2015 Budget reaffirms this Government’s commitment to foster economic empowerment of women with a boost of $1.82 million allocation for the Department of Women,” Ms Akbar said.

In recognition of the important role played by non-governmental organisations, faith-based organisations and civil organisations, the Government has allocated $150,000 to enable them to “advance the interests of women and girls around the country.”

Miss Akbar said $500,000 had been allocated for the 2015 National Women’s Expo, as a platform to build confidence, business skills development and enhancement of Fijian made products.

Meanwhile, Ba Women’s Forum president, Dr Maria Doton, commended the Government for ensuring a gender responsive budget.

“The implementation of Fiji’s National Gender Policy will instill confidence and provide socio-economic opportunities for women to aspire to reach their maximum potential,” Dr Doton said.

The Marama na Tui Ba, Adi Laite Koroirua, acknowledged the Government for assisting the Nailaga Women’s Group in Ba.

“We usually find that women are neglected in their communities. The recent awareness in the 16 Days of Activism campaign, led by the Minister for Women, Rosy Akbar, is quite encouraging.

“It is a great incentive for our women to be guided by a women’s leader who has demonstrated great compassion and commitment to assist the women and disadvantaged families.

“It is through the Government’s swift response, the Nailaga Women’s Group will soon see a much awaited facility, being opened to provide training and employment opportunities for the women and youths in Ba,” Adi Laite said.
