Prominent members of the business community yesterday quickly paid tribute following the death of Sundip Patel, the trailblazing managing director of the C.J. Patel Group.

The funeral of Mr Patel, 52, who died on Sunday after a heart attack while exercising at the family home in Suva, is tomorrow (see funeral announcement on page 7 today).

Tourism industry leader Tony Whitton, managing director of Rosie Holidays Group, described how Mr Patel confided in him about an eco-tourism project that was dear to his heart.

“He wanted to discuss setting up a nature trail walk in Fiji similar to the nature trails in New Zealand and said Fiji had some of the prettiest natural assets on par with anywhere else in the world…and ‘why hadn’t it been done in Fiji?’.

“He was a humble man but a man with sharp intellect and business acumen.

“I have often admired how he has grown the CJ Patel Group with a diverse portfolio of business and brands that span the globe.

“Showing how resourceful Fijians can be, and entrepreneurs that hold their own on the global stage. My deepest condolences to Shveta, Alisha, Sonia ,Jay.”

Carpenters Fiji Limited retail and marketing director Kunaseelan Sabaratnam relayed his condolences on behalf of the MH team, running the biggest supermarket chain in the country.

“Words just can’t express the loss of our dearest Mr Patel and I am still in a total shock, as I was supposed to have dinner with him this week.

“All I would want to say that, Mr Patel has taken Fiji Sun to a new height in this country and as long I am here, I will proudly support and grow this brand.

“I have seen how this newspaper started and where it is now.”

Mobile leader Vodafone Fiji in a statement: “We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the sudden passing away of Mr Sundip Patel.

“Vodafone Fiji and the CJ Patel Group of Companies through its late managing director Mr Patel have had a long and successful business association for many years.

“The success of Vodafone in part can be attributed to the strong business relationship that Mr Patel help forge between the two companies.

“Epay which is part of CJ Patel Group of companies is the major distributor of Vodafone recharge cards and Epay vouchers throughout the country

“Mr Patel was an astute and visionary business leader yet a very simple and humble human being.

“We always found Mr Patel a very easy person to deal who was thoroughly professional in all his dealings.

“Our hearts go out to the family, in particular to Mrs Patel and their three children for their untimely loss. Our sincere condolences and prayers goes out to the family. May the lord almighty give them the strength and inner peace to bear such a huge loss.”

Fijian Holdings Group chief executive, Nouzab Fareed said: “He was close friend of FHL and was always there is assist.

“We really miss him as a friend.”

Vision Group Limited chief executive, P.L. Munasinghe said he was close friends with Mr Patel.

“I’m still in utter shock and disbelief as I’m still coming to terms with the sudden news,” Mr Munasinghe said.

“Sundip was so full of life and I don’t think he had any commercial enemies.

“My deepest and sincere condolences go to his family in their time of grief.”

Fiji Airways managing director/chief executive, Stefan Pichler said: “It is with great sadness to hear about this loss.

“Fiji Airways Group and all our staff send their prayers to the family.”

Mr Patel was newly appointed to the Fiji Airways board earlier this month.
