A 38-year-old Australian citizen appeared at the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday in relation to the $30 million drug bust in Lautoka two weeks ago.

The accused, Ethan Kai, appeared before Magistrate Sulakubou Raramasi on one charge of unlawful importation of illicit drugs contrary to section 4 (1) of the Illicit Drugs Control Act.

Defence lawyer Janend Sharma asked for bail but was refused.

The State lawyer objected to bail on the grounds the accused is a foreign national and there was a high risk of absconding if the accused was to be granted bail.

The State also made an application for the matter to be transferred to the High Court in view of the amount of heroin involved.

The suspect has been remanded at the Natabua Corrections facility.

The case has been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka for first call on the January 14 before Justice DeSilva.

Meanwhile, the accused also had another pending charge for one count for failing to declare foreign currency.

He had been charged three days prior to the drug bust.

He had allegedly failed to declare foreign currencies amounting to $28,870.95 at the Nadi International Airport.

Magistrate Raramasi has transferred the case to the Nadi Magistrates Court since it involved the airport border authorities.

Kai will appear on January 23.
