The Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Parveen Kumar and a guest at Labasa last night.

Labasa Town has come a long way, says Parveen Kumar.

The Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, was speaking at the celebrations to mark Labasa’s 75th anniversary at the Labasa Civic Centre.

The anniversary was attended by more than 500 guests including business people, council workers, Government officials and ordinary citizens.

Mr Kumar said that the small town which was proclaimed as township on May 5, 1939 started from very humble beginnings.

“From the hundred citizens in 1930s and 40s, the town today has a population of close to 10,000 people within the municipal boundary” he said.

Mr Kumar said that the municipal councils in Fiji had made significant contributions for the growth and development of the country as a whole in particularly Labasa.

He also declared Labasa as the administrative capital of the Northern division as many Government Heads of Departments were stationed there.

“It is also timely, that we pay tribute to the many staff and workers over the years for their service in different areas” Mr Bala said.

He acknowledged them for promoting civic pride in the Friendly North.
