Selection Headache For Swamy

The coaching panel of the Vodafone Fiji Under-17 team are finding it tough to reduce their number of players to 20.

Coach Kamal Swamy said there were alot of talented players in the current 25-member squad, which were in camp at the Ba Football Academy.

“We will be reducing the players to 20 next week but all are capable individual players and it is making it hard for us to choose the best,” said Swamy.

He said preparations were ongoing and players were injury-free.

The players have been sacrificing their time off as the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) playoff is next month.

“It was good atmosphere to see their parents as well since we invited them to spend lunch and dinner on Christmas Day with the players. We also had one-to-one talks with their respective parents on the players’ performances and their background in developments,” he said.

Swamy remained tight-lipped on who will wear the captaincy arm band since they will be making their age group debut.

“We have earmarked about five players, who have showed age grade leadership on and off the field. The person needs to understand the game well and guide the players properly.”

Meanwhile, Fiji is in Group A with defending champions New Zealand, New Caledonia, Samoa, Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea.

Group B has Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, American Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti.

Fiji play its first match against NZ on January 13 at the JS Blatter Stadium in Apia while matches will be co-hosted at the Pago Pago stadium in American Samoa.

OTHER MATCHES: January 15: Fiji vs PNG, January 17: Fiji vs New Caledonia, January 19: Fiji vs Cook Islands, January 21: Fiji vs Samoa.
