Two girls – 5 and 10, of Lavuci, Vadravadra, Ba, are admitted with serious injuries, one of them critical, in hospital after they were involved in an accident in Ba on Tuesday evening.

Police said the accident was caused by a drunk driver driving a rental car with registration LR1956.

The car allegedly bumped into another vehicle causing it to veer off the road and mow down the two girls and a 34-year-old woman who were standing on the roadside.

Two of the victims, Laniana Senivau (nee Patel), an employee of Fiji Sugar Corporation (Ba), and her 10-year-old niece Akeneta are in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the Lautoka Hospital.

The five-year-old victim is admitted at the Ba Mission Hospital.

A relative who witnessed the accident, Atama Nawaciono, said the three were standing on the roadside.

Police spokewoman Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident happened at 7.30pm.

“A vehicle registration LR1956 clipped the rear of a van driven by a 44-year-old supermarket manager causing it to veer off the road and bump a 34-year-old woman, a 10-year-old girl and another five-year-old girl,” Ms Naisoro said.

It is alleged the driver of the rental vehicle was under the influence of alcohol and fled the scene.

“The rental car driver is in custody at the Ba Police Station and traffic officers are investigating the matter.” she said.
