Fiji Hockey Federation (FHF) president Dr Robin Mitchell has confirmed that financial constraints has forced the withdrawl of the national men’s hockey team from the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) World League Round 2 series in Singapore in January.

Dr Mitchell and Fijain head coach Hector Smith informed the media in a press conference in Suva that FHF is unable to raise the funds to take the national men’s team to Singapore in a short span of time following the League Round 1 earlier this month (December).

“We’ve already notified FIH that Fiji would not be taking part in Singapore,” he said.

“That was confirmed last night to the competitions manager and after the tournament in Suva , Papua New Guinea and Samoa were also notified that if Fiji doesn’t go they should indicate by January 7, they’ll take our place or not. If they don’t then there’s either Europe, Asia or Africa replacing them.

“So in terms of Fiji hockey the main point of this press conference is to let you know or to confirm that the men are not travelling as we ll as the women.”

The cost of sending the men’s team to Singapore would cost one hundred and forty thousand dollars ($140,000) and the timing according to hockey president was not on their side. The women earlier pulled out of the Round 2 competition to be held in India in March.

Dr Mitchell said the team can now focus on the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in July, 2015.

Smith says the national teams will put in the hard yards to try and retain theirnumber one position in the region come the Pacific Games.
