Today signifies the bravery and hard work done by our servicemen, says Apolonia Veisega.

She was part of the commemoration service for the first contingent to World War 1 at the National War Memorial Site in Suva yesterday.

“My brother, Private Mikaele Nadomu died in 1987 while serving in Lebanon,”Mrs Veisega said.

“Every year, I look forward to this commemoration service because I usually come and meet other families who went through the same loss as me,” she said.

Mrs Veisega acknowledged all servicemen and their families because she knew the sacrifices families went through during their time of service.

Akosita Nawaqalevu, a soldier’s wife, said she attended the memorial service every year.

“My husband also served in the military from 1987 and retired in 2002,”Mrs Nawaqalevu said.

“Even though he has a stroke, I still make sure that I attend the service because it usually reminds me of how blessed I am to still have my husband alive,” she said.

The Roll Call of the First Contingent was delivered by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

This was followed by the laying of wreaths by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva, members of the diplomatic corps, the acting Commissioner of Police Sikeli Vuniwaqa, Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu, a representative of the Royal British Legion and the president of the Returned Soldiers and Ex-Servicemen Association.

The service commemorated the first Fijian Contingent to fight in the war.
