Australian couple Phillip and Catalina Ginges is always reminded of how fascinating Fijian people are.

The Sydnersiders were among the returnees spending their New Year at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort at Yanuuca Island which went fully booked.

Mr Ginges first came to Fiji 25 years ago while his Columbian wife, Catalina was in the country for the first time six years ago.

“We thought it would be a very good idea to spend our New Year’s away from home rather than in my home land in Colombia or back in Australia,” said Mrs Ginges.

The couple have travelled extensively around the globe, but admitted that Fiji despite not so rich like the Australian, seems to be happy all the time.

“Fijians are the happiest people in the world, everybody is happy to say Bula,” she added.

“This is the first country in the whole world we go to and the people love to teach others how to say bula vinaka, or yadra.

“I think anyone who comes to Fiji for the first time will return knowing these few Fijian words. This is very impressive, branding your country as the friendly nation.”

“What they possess may not even be much, but it makes them happy. Family and church plays important part in their lives.”

The couple has been married for the last 15 years and they live near Bhondi Beach in Sydney.

Resort general manager Graig Powell said, “The new year offer new opportunity and promises going forward with good health and prosperity and time to think of the less fortunate who are among us.”

Meanwhile, at the stroke of midnight, guests witnessed fireworks displayed within the resort’s premises.

“I pay tribute to Bill Rancoon from NZ and his crew. This is a showcase and the guests are impressed. People expectation do grow and always looking for more thrilling events,” Mr Powell said.
