Minister Outlines 2015 Priorities

Empowering women and the disadvantaged will be one their priorities this year says Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar.

“One of our priorities this year is to fasttrack the social welfare processes so that those who meet the eligibility criteria are able to access the assistance within a short time,” Ms Akbar said.

She said through reforms, the ministry had adopted an electronic mode of payment, so that their clients, particularly those that were sickly and elderly, no longer had to wait in queue to access their allowances. All the clients now enjoy easy access by withdrawing their monthly allowances which directly gets deposited into their bank accounts.

She said women empowerment would be mainstreamed into social, economic, political and cultural spheres of development.

“Focus will also be to develop the untapped resources and skills within rural communities to maximise development opportunities, especially for women’s groups to venture into production of export-oriented products like virgin coconut oil,”she said.

Ms Akbar said the ministry would continue to strengthen its Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children programme.

“To date a total of 89 have joined the Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community Campaign of which – 39 communities have been declared; 27 communities have committed and 23 identified and going through the 10 phases.

“The ministry will push forward to expand its network of 1702 women’s groups’ network that has been established through the links with the Department of Women using the distribution of sewing machines,” she said.
