140 Fires In 2014: NFA

Last year (2014) was not a good year for the National Fire Authority (NFA), as it attended to 140 structural fires. This was 20 more than the previous year, according to NFA chief executive officer John O’Conor.

“The National Fire Authority has been conducting more awareness programmes and gotten more trucks in 2014.

“This year NFA has set its focus in reducing the number of structural fires and will need support from members of the community to assist us in our campaign,” Mr O’Connor said.

He said members of the community needed to change their attitude about fire safety.

“Every home owner must accept responsibility and accountability for the fire safety of their property and their family members,” said Mr O’Connor.

“Looking at the results from last year with the 140 structural fires, four lives were lost and this illustrates that people are not taking fire safety seriously. Losing a life is not acceptable since it cannot be replaced.”

Fifty-one per cent of the property fires have been attributed to carelessness and negligence.

“NFA will vigorously conduct awareness programmes this year and at the same time target to visit schools, settlements and villages with emphasis on giving out relevant advice and information to the community to make them aware of the devastating effects of fires,” Mr O’Connor said.
