Bau high chief, Ratu George Kadavulevu Cakobau yesterday paid tribute to the former Permanent Secretary for Sugar, Mr Manasa Vaniqi.

He said he was a hardworking man and a key reformer right hand man for the Prime Minister, Mr Voreqe Bainimarama.

Ratu George said Mr Vaniqi was a man for the people and was always ready to provide service to all Fijians.

“He does not fear anyone but God alone,” he said.

Ratu George said he was approachable and would be sorely missed.

According to Ratu George, Mr Vaniqi who hailed from Dreketi, Wailevu East in Cakaudrove, served people with a smile and for that alone, the problems that they had were partly resolved.

He said he learned with regret the passing away of Mr Vaniqi in Lautoka.

Mr Vaniqi he said was instrumental with the revival of the sugar industry.

He said people had been going around telling the public that the industry was slowly dying.

He said these opposition politicians during their time had politicised the industry and farmers were used for their political gains only.

During Mr Vaniqi’s leadership and with the support of the Prime Minister, Mr Voreqe Bainimarama all political influences in the industry were neutralised.

He was also able to convice landowners and chiefs to extend leases in all sugarcane belts around the country.

Ratu George said it would be hard to find someone to replace the late Mr Vaniqi.

The late Mr Vaniq was part of the Government team led by the Prime Minister to the 46th International Sugar Organisation meeting that was held in London in December 2014.

The team inlcuded Fiji’s High Commissioner to London Solo Mara, Acting Ambassador Fiji Embassy in Brussels Nidhendra Singh, Executive Chairman of FSC Abdul Khan, Chief Executive Officer, Sugar Cane Growers Council Sundresh Chetty, Industrial Commissioner for Sugar Industry Tribunal Timothy Brown and Director, Sugar Viliame Gucake.
