I Am The Vunivalu – Ratu George States His Claim On Chiefly Title

Bau chief, Ratu George Kadavulevu Cakobau (Junior) has staked his claim as paramount chief of the Kubuna Confederacy or Turaga na Vunivalu ni Bau.

Ratu George asserted his claim yesterday at his chiefly residence at Mokani Village, Bau, Tailevu.

The Turaga na Vunivalu ni Bau is the paramount chief of the Kubuna confederacy, which belongs to the Tui Kaba clan based on Bau Island. It is generally considered to be the highest chiefly title in Fiji.

When asked about his younger brother Ratu Epenisa Cakobau he said – “I am older than him and his time has not yet arrived. As of today, I am the rightful holder of the chiefly Vunivalu title and he knows it.”

He said the people of Bau knew about the rightful holder of the title. He claimed there was a group that had tried to dispute his claim and given their support to Ratu Epenisa.

Ratu George said he had the support of his elder sister, Adi Litia Cakobau. He said his late sister Adi Samanunu Cakobau, also supported him before she passed away.

“Adi Samanunu had given her total support to me to be the Vunivalu to replace our father, the late Ratu Sir George.”

Ratu Sir George was installed as Vunivalu in 1959. He died in 1989. Sinced then the chiefly title had been vacant.

Ratu Sir George was first married to Adi Veniana Gavoka, Radini Levuka, daughter of Ratu Inoke Mara, Roko Tui Namata.

From his first marriage, he had three children – Adi Samanunu Cakobau-Talakuli, Adi Litia Cakobau and Ratu George Kadavulevu Cakobau (Junior).

From Ratu Sir George’s second marriage to Lady Adi Lelea Seruwaia Balekiwai, he had four children Adi Salote Kaunilotuma Cakobau, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, Ratu Josefa Celua Cakobau and Ratu Tanoa Visawaqa Cakobau.

Ratu George insisted it was now his time and Ratu Epenisa’s time had not yet arrived.

He conceded that Ratu Epenisa would replace him some day.
