Navy Suspect Boat Capsize

The Fiji Navy suspects that the fibreglass boat missing in Lau waters with two men on board capsized on the first day it went missing.

Navy Commander, John Fox said this was because they had been searching for more than a week, without anything being found.

“We pulled out on New Years Eve. The Navy was coordinating the search. We used planes and police boats and we have all around but there was no sign of the boat,” Commander Fox said.

“We suspect that the boat had capsized the first day they drifted because with the search areas we have done and according to the drift pattern they should be somewhere on Viti Levu or in one of the islands in the Lomaiviti group.”

He suspected unfavorable weather conditions on the day in question also led to the capsizing of the boat.

Maika Rasoqosoqo, from Nayau Island and Laisa Babiau from Lakeba, were reported missing on Christmas day after they did not arrive at their destination.

The pair was travelling from Mabula, Cicia to Nayau in the Lau group when they went missing.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the search for the two men was continuing.
