Mrs Meiva Setoka Vaniqi vividly recalls the last time she saw her husband, Manasa Vaniqi, a few days ago. Little did she now know they would part ways.

“While he was on the bed the night before he passed away, he looked at us and spoke to us very well,” Mrs Vaniqi said in an emotional tone.

“I did not expect him to leave us too early like this. He was always a happy and good father and husband.”

She said they had been married for 37 years and nine months.

Mr Vaniqi, the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Wednesday morning (3am) and died after a heart attack around 5am on New Year’s Day.

He was to celebrate his 63rd birthday on March 20.

Mr Vaniqi is survived by his wife Meiva, seven children and seven grand children.

Meanwhile, director for Sugar, Viliame Gucake visited the family at their residence at the FSC compound in Waqadra, Nadi yesterday.

“We visited the family to hear their wishes regarding the preparation for the funeral and will present a report to the Prime Minister’s office,” said Mr Gucake.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
