Ministry Wants More Youths

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou said the ministry wanted to boost the involvement of young people in Government’s youth programmes.

“I believe a lot of youths out there are not accessible to our programmes because their clubs are not registered with us.

“We want to get out there and get them registered,” Mr Tuitubou said.

He said they would also strengthen existing programmes and empower youth leaders and co-ordinators.

“Youths represent 31.1 per cent of the voting population in Fiji according to the data we have. That’s a big number.

“The role of these young leaders in our community is very important and it is important to get them involved,” Mr Tuitubou said.

He said there were plans to build more training centres.

“Currently we have three centres on Viti Levu; one in Saivou, Ra, one in Valelevu, Nasinu, and one in Sigatoka which has not been operating for some years and has recently been rebuilt.”

There is also a centre in Yavitu on Kadavu Island, one in Naleba, Labasa, and Naqere, Savusavu in Vanua Levu.

“We would like to reach out to other divisions, our strategy is to understand youths on the ground,” Mr Tuitubou said.

He said this year the ministry would also make a long term plan for the next four years.
