Two former secondary school rugby stars departed yesterday to take up their rugby contracts in France.

Former Queen Victoria School second five eight Edward Sawailau, 18 will join FC Grenoble while Lelean Memorial School’s number eight Pio Muarua joins Agen rugby club.

Sawailau said he had a tough decision to make regarding his future in rugby since he had already signed a contract with New Zealand’s ITM Cup’s champion Taranaki.

“It was a tough decision to make since I have signed a contract with Taranaki,” said Sawailau.

“I thought about it seriously since there are more rugby players in New Zealand than any other country in the world. It will be ideal for me to opt for France since it will be faster for me to progress compared to playing in NZ.

The Nauwa, Macuata native is ready for a baptism of fire in the Top 14 competition where he will be playing A-grade rugby with Fijian international Alipate Naitini and Nigel Hunt (NZ).

“There are top international players in the team knowing that it will be tough competition but I am ready for it,” he added.

Pio Muarua who hails from Bukama, Yasawa said he had been preparing himself since he joined LMS.

Now the he is looking forward to celebrate his 19 years birthday away from home with few Sporting Union Agen Lot-et-Garonne players including Australia’s Junior Palesasa and Viliame Waqaseduadua (NZ).

“My last five years at LMS I made sure that I am through with it, as I was not good academically but loved rugby so much,” said Muarua.

“It was a tough time during those years and I am pretty sure it won’t be an easy ride in Agen as well. The atmosphere there will be another story and will work hard towards what the coaches say.”
